As an esthetician, what do I use on my own skin?
While in school for esthetics, there are so many things you learn that would have been helpful to have known years ago. For example; who knew that lying out in the sun for hours slathered in baby oil to accelerate my tan, would also lead to fine lines at the age of 27?! The fine lines would lead to wrinkles at the age of 30, which would lead to an obsession with Botox. Ah, just think of all the handbags I could have purchased with the money spent on Botox!
But enough about the past... We’ve all abused our skin one way or another, and now we want to instantly fix it to look absolutely fabulous. With all the treatments, and products available on the market it’s almost impossible to know what’s best for your skin to keep it looking young, and possibly even peel back a year or two. Being an esthetician my skin is expected to look great but, I’m also on a budget and hate spending a lot of time applying products. So, I use products that are absolutely essential to keeping my skin looking young and healthy. When it comes to skin care there are three basics; hydration, cell turnover and SPF protection. The combination of these three key items keeps your skin tight and free from age spots and wrinkles.
My skin care regimen:
Botox – Once every six months to keep away crow’s feet around my eyes and fine lines on my forehead.
gloTherapeutics Refine Cleanser – A daily cleanser with chemical exfoliation to remove the top layer of dead skin.
Obagi Tretinoin – A strong pharmaceutical grade Retin A, to keep skin cells turning over. Retin A is the only ingredient FDA approved to fight wrinkles. This is hands-down the best anti-aging product any woman can have in her arsenal.
Obagi Eye Cream – No over the counter eye cream actually works to fight wrinkles, they can’t penetrate deep enough. The eyes are one of the first things someone notices about you, and a good place to splurge a little in the budget.
gloTherapeutics Barrier Balm – I have extremely dry skin and this product is the ONLY thing I’ve ever found to keep my skin looking healthy in the winter. It’s not for everyone as it has a Vaseline type texture, but if you have dry skin, it’s a must have. For lighter weight moisturizer in the summer I switch to gloTherapeutics Moisture Rich Cream.
ReNu SPF – Having your skin exposed to UV rays damages skin cells that are meant to help tighten your skin, damaging these cells leads to wrinkles and sagging skin. No matter how great you look with a tan, it’s not worth the consequences. Spray tan, or tan in a bottle is the only way to go. Lately I’ve been loving Jergen’s Natural Glow daily moisturizer.
ReNu Hydroquinone 8% - This is a formula that Dr. Patel personally formulated to bleach out dark pigmented spots on the skin such as sundamage, freckles, or in my case melasma. This is a very strong product that really works to even out skin tone.
Chemical Peels – Every month I do a light chemical peel to remove dead, damaged skin. This simple treatment is what will have you looking 40 at the age of 50 if done on a regular basis.
Skin care can be as simple as that! Cleanse and moisturize in the morning and then apply eye cream. At night, cleanse and apply one treatment product and eye cream.
One last tip, if you are on a budget and want to save money on skin care, there are some products that are better to save on then others. SPF, cleanser and moisturizer are good places to save because these products stay on the top layers of the skin. Over the counter products are made to beautify the top layers of skin, and by law are not allowed to penetrate deep into the skin to treat issues like wrinkles, age spots and sagging skin. Products that can treat these issues can only be sold through a doctor’s office.
Don’t be fooled by false advertising by brand name skin care products sold at department stores. These are the number one way to waste money on skin care as they are the same quality as products sold at your local drug store. If you choose to buy some basic skin care products over the counter, go for stores like Walgreens or Wal-Mart rather than Sephora or Macy’s.

The average woman is carrying around 5 shades of lipstick! We change our lipstick most often to fit the mood we are in, it's been proven that applying a bold shade oflipstick can even lift our mood and make us feel more confident. But what is the shade we choose saying about our personality to others?
Classic Red – Red is a sign of a confident woman. Red lipstick signifies success in ones career. It’s a bold statement saying, “look at me”! A woman who wears a bold shade of red is seen as a one who likes to be the center of attention. This woman may still be looking for something... or someone.
Burgundy / Deep Red – This woman is seen as fashionable and in-control. Men are intrigued by a woman in this color as she is seen as a challenge. She appears powerful and sexy, while to some women she may seem unapproachable.
Shade of Orange – Fun, spunky, and the life of the party are definitions for a woman wearing orange lipstick. She is seen as being full of fire and ambition. This color of lipstick makes a statement that you are not held by traditional rules of beauty. You’re a risk taker and thrill seeker.
Coral / Light Pink – A woman in soft shades of pink is seen as feminine. She is also seen as happy and content with a good love life. This look has a touch of class; it says you are calm and collected. This is the girly-girl color of lipstick signifying you have many girlfriends and like to spend time shopping and spending quality time with those close to you. When men see this shade, they see a cute girl that is probably already taken.
Bright Pink – This is the true color of a flirt. It’s a kiss on the cheek that will leave a man wanting more. Women wearing this color are seen as happy, flirty and adventurous. They may listen to rock and roll or punk music and have a job that enables them to use their creativity. A woman wearing bright pink thinks outside the box. She loves to be different and feminine.
Neutral / Sheer – Here’s to the less is more mentality; to the woman who is more concerned with the person she is on the inside, than what she wears on the outside. A woman wearing a sheer colored gloss is thought to be soft spoken, intelligent, and nurturing. Study’s find this is men’s least favorite shade, while on the other hand, woman associate this shade with contentment and stability.
Here’s the best part, we are women! None of us can be narrowed down to just one of these personality types. One moment we want to command attention as we present a new idea at the office, or bat our eyes at a handsome stranger. Moments later we may be out shopping with our children and want to appear soft and feminine... and so goes our love for lipstick! Lipstick is the fastest and most affordable way to change our image, our mood and our outlook. So have some fun and don’t be afraid to be bold!
We all have those things about our skin that just drive us crazy! We wake up in the morning and see dark bags and circles under our eyes, making it look like we haven’t slept in days. Or, our lips are dry and chapped looking nothing like the luscious lips featured on the cover of Glamour. Then there’s the infamous, “Oh no, where did this huge pimple come from?!” Below is a list of morning maddening beauty blunders, and the simplest ways to fix them.
Bags Under the Eyes
Yes, we all know we need more beauty sleep and a better diet… but besides a relaxing vacation without the kids where 10am mornings are the norm, what else can make bags under your eyes go away?
Step 1. Before bed, place 2 caffeinated tea bags into the refrigerator.
Step 2. In the morning, remove the tea bags and dampen them slightly with cold water.
Step 3. Lie down, close your eyes, and place the cool dampened tea bags over your eyes for about 10 minutes. (The caffeine will be an instant pick-me-up for tired eyes, while the tannin contained in the tea leaves reduces swelling and discoloration.)
Dry Chapped Lips
The kissable lips we all want are only a few short steps away!
Step 1. Do not lick your lips. Though it may feel good at the time, when you lick your lips, the saliva evaporates leaving your lips even drier than they were before.
Step 2. Exfoliate. Mix together a dime size amount of Vaseline with a pinch of sugar and apply to your lips with a q-tip, then gently rub your toothbrush over your lips for exfoliation.
Step 3. Moisturize. Use a petroleum-based ointment like Vaseline or Aquaphor to seal in moisture. (We offer a product by gloMinerals called Barrier Balm that works as the ultimate lip balm, and can also be used as a moisturizer for ultra-dry skin.)
Step 4. Lipstick. Mix blush into your Vaseline for an ultra-hydrating lipstick. Stay away from long lasting lipsticks as they are usually very drying.
Ugh! Pimples always seem to know when we have a big event coming up, then boom, there it is, out of nowhere for all to see. But don’t panic, we have a remedy that should have it gone by morning!
Step 1. Don’t pop it. Resist the urge because just like your Momma told you when you were younger, popping it will only make things worse.
Step 2. Apply tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial.
Step 3. Crush an aspirin and mix it into a small amount of water, then apply this paste to the pimple for 30 seconds. Use a little pressure and press the mixture gently against the pimple.
Step 4. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to the pimple. (Not the gel kind, but actual paste.) Cover with a Band-Aid and leave on overnight while you sleep.
Cold sores are embarrassing and painful. We want to hide them, and have them vanish as quickly as possible.
Step 1. See your doctor at the first sign of burning. Dr. Patel usually prescribes Valtrex or Zovirx which can drastically shorten the life of a cold sore, or even keep it from becoming a cold sore, if caught early.
Step 2. Apply a cream (not liquid) concealer with a yellow tint. The yellow will help neutralize any redness.
Step 3. Lightly dust on finishing powder.
Step 4. Apply a cream (not liquid) concealer that matches your skin tone.
Step 5. Seal with a light dusting of finishing powder.
With winter around the corner, many of us start to dread the dry, flaky skin that accompanies it. Here are a few simple steps that will help keep your skin feeling hydrated and refreshed.
Step 1. Wash your face with a hydrating milk cleanser.
Step 2. Apply moisturizer while your face is still damp.
Step 3. Let the moisturizer soak in for 30 seconds before applying your makeup.
If possible avoid using powder makeup. Winter is a great time to switch to a tinted moisturizer to keep your skin from looking dry and aged. Chemical peels are also one of the best methods to fighting dry skin.
Fine Lines Around the Eyes
The key to keeping fine lines from appearing around your eyes is to keep them hydrated.
Step 1. Apply a vitamin C serum which helps increase hydration, brightens the skin and improves collagen production.
Step 2. Apply eye cream under, and over, your makeup to keep the eye area hydrated.
Step 3. Avoid squinting. Any time you are in the sun, wear sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection.
Step 4. At night, remove your makeup with a hydrating milk cleanser, then apply your eye cream once again, never leaving this delicate skin without hydration.
The key to staying young is keeping your skin exfoliated, hydrated and protected from the sun. Almost all the skin conditions can be solved by these three simple steps. For more information on these tip and more, call to schedule an hour long consultation completely free!
One of the best ways to improve the health of your skin is to eat… Yes, eat! The skin is the largest organ in the body and needs good nutrition to stay hydrated, radiant and blemish free. The most important ingredients your skin can’t get enough of are vitamin C and vitamin A. Vitamin C is the most important anti-oxidant for your skin. It helps to reduce wrinkles, strengthens collagen, thickens the skin, enhances sunscreen protection, helps retain moisture and even reduces sun spots and sun damage. As we age, our cell turn-over rate creeps slower and slower. This is why some skin has the appearance of being dull and lifeless. Vitamin A also forces skin cells to go into the process of mitosis, bringing healthy young cells to the surface and giving the skin a youthful glow. It also helps unclog pores and keeps your skin blemish free. Putting these important ingredients into your body will keep your skin looking vibrant and young; it’s the key to finding the fountain of youth. Here’s a list of the 10 best foods for your skin!
Water – The more water you drink, the better your skin will look! Hydration is the key to having plump youthful looking skin. Water also works to flush out any of the junk you eat throughout the day so that it doesn’t show up in your complexion.
Greek Yogurt – A great source of Vitamin A to keep a good complexion, free of blemishes.
Eggs – The list of reasons eggs are good for your skin could go on and on. Eggs reduce dryness and they are also a great source of iron. If you wake up with dark circles under your eyes, an egg for breakfast could be the cure!
Almonds – A handful a day will help keep the sun burn away. Almonds are loaded with vitamin E which helps defend against sun damage.
Berries – Blackberries, blueberries and strawberries are all packed with antioxidants. Anti-oxidants fight the damage caused by oxidation caused by free-radicals which cause the skin to age prematurely.
Acerola Cherries – One of these cherries has 100% of your daily allowance for Vitamin C! And with these great tasting treats, who can stop at just one?
Avocados – If you’re wondering what to order the next time you’re at your favorite Mexican restaurant, go for guacamole! Avocados are full of essential oils and Vitamin B. The essential oils in avocados work as a moisture barrier on top of your skin, trapping moisture inside. Avocadoes also help to sooth irritated, red and blotchy skin.
Salmon – Fatty acids found in foods like salmon, walnuts, canola oil and flaxseed are responsible for healthy cell membranes. The cell membrane is responsible for holding in moisture, which means eating these foods will keep your skin plump and looking young. Think of flaxseed as your natural wrinkle fighter.
Green Tea – If you must add something to your water, let it be green tea! It has anti-inflammatory properties, and helps protect the cell membrane protecting you from UV rays and essentially helping to prevent skin cancer.
Broccoli – Eat your greens, broccoli and other leafy greens are packed with vitamin A which helps your cells turn over faster. Speeding up your cell turn-over rate is the key to the fountain of youth.
So eat up, and feel great about it!
With the economy in a state of high unemployment, you would assume that luxury industries like cosmetics would be plummeting. But rather than slowing down, business at ReNu is growing. You may be interested in the reason why, is there a connection between the way you look, and finding a job?
In an interview done by Newsweek, 57% of hiring managers said that qualified but unattractive candidates are likely to have a harder time landing a job and are advised to spend as much time “making sure they look attractive” as on perfecting a resume. Surprisingly, this statistic is not focused only on women. CBS did a study with Daniel S. Hamermesh, professor of economics at the University of Texas and found that actually in most studies, the effects of looks on earnings are bigger among men than women. He guessed that beautiful people earn more because they are more self-confident, people pay more attention to them and listen better to their ideas, and that plain and simple, people prefer to be around good looking people. On average people who are deemed as better looking, make 5% more than their less attractive counterpart. So not only does looking better help in finding a job, it also helps in securing better pay.
We have found in our own clinic that men and women are coming in for treatments such as Botox and skin tightening, because they feel that looking more youthful will make them appear more hirable. Kelli Billmeyer, laser tech at ReNu commented that, “With the advance procedures now offered at laser centers, it is possible to take years off of someone’s appearance without sending them under the knife.”
Air-brushed magazine ads are giving us an unrealistic picture of beauty, and we are striving towards an un-natural look of perfection. Laser treatments are a way of maintaining a natural look while appearing more youthful. “While doing a laser service we are strengthening collagen and speeding up the cell turn-over rate. It’s about improving the health of the skin.” “We have a skin scanner that reads the age of a client’s skin during their initial consultation, we then target the areas that either the client wants to improve upon, or areas that the skin scanner finds are aging the appearance such as wrinkles and sun damage. After a series of treatments, we scan the skin again to see the results of the age of your skin after treatments. It’s exciting to see the improvement in black and white.” According to the Better Business Bureau, those seeking employment that age 45 and older are on unemployment longer. And by the Better Business Bureau standards, longer means six months or more. This category falls into the baby boom generation, most of who should be at the peak of their careers with a great resume and impressive career history.
Beauty just may be the ugly truth about getting employed and making more money.
